Take a Hike!
I love summer! Even though San Francisco never feels quite like the hot summers I remember growing up on the Peninsula, every once in a while the sun will show itself. Lately Chris and I have been getting out of the foggy city and taking some really cool hikes. We are so lucky to live in the Bay Area, where you have mountains, coast and just unbelievable surroundings!
We like to hike to the point of exhaustion. We drink a bunch of water beforehand, don't bring anything with us, and set out for several miles of tough terrain. It's the best! By the end we feel just starving and ready to eat an amazingly wonderful meal.
Basically, it's going back to our hunter-gatherer roots. Cavemen didn't have treadmills, or flat paved tracks to run on. They didn't bring Cliff bars with them to satisfy the sweet pangs of hunger. Our ancestors built muscle and got cardio workouts by setting out on tough hikes.
Totally different than a gym workout, it feels so good to be surrounded by beautiful untapped nature, and just brings a sense of peace. Throughout the hikes we will stop to jump up on some rocks or climb a tree here or there, to intensify the workout. It's way better than lifting hand weights at 24 hour fitness.
I came across a post by Mark Sisson about why getting to nature is so good for you, check it out here:
